The Wonders of Anatolia
On the ancient lands of Anatolia, two of the most magnificent structures in history rise: the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis. These unique structures are two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Halicarnassus was an ancient Ionian city located in the Caria region on the coast of Anatolia. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is among the most significant structures that shed light on the history of Bodrum. Built in 350 BC by Artemisia, the wife of the Carian Satrap King Mausolus, this monumental tomb stands out as one of the most magnificent architectural and artistic achievements of its time. Although it has succumbed to the relentless passage of time and lost its former glory, this historical structure, located on Turgutreis Street in the center of Bodrum, continues to welcome visitors as an open-air museum.
On the other hand, the Temple of Artemis, located in the heart of the city of Ephesus, was constructed around 550 BC and is a man-made miracle dedicated to a goddess. Every corner of the temple is surrounded by columns that symbolize grace and grandeur. As a testament to the deep reverence for the goddess Artemis, visitors from all over the world flocked to this temple.
However, like the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, this magnificent temple could not endure on the stage of history for long and vanished over time. The most beautiful artifacts of the temple are now displayed at the British Museum in London. Nevertheless, both structures continue to live on in memory as symbols of Anatolia’s legendary wealth.
