Maras Ice Cream
It is not known whether the first ice cream in history was enjoyed by Alexander the Great, who liked to eat ice mixed with honey, fruits and nuts, or the Chinese, who mixed rice with milk and froze it in the snow in 200 BC. But everyone knows that Maraş Ice Cream is the best.
It is rumored that this ice cream was discovered in the palaces as an extension of a type of frozen dessert called “Karsambaç” in the Ottoman era. One day, Osman Aga from Maraş, a merchant who earned his living selling salep (milk and orchid roots drink), mixed the remaining salep after the day’s sales with sugar and milk and buried it in the snow. After a while, the change in the consistency of the salep attracted the attention of Osman Aga of Maraş. Osman Aga of Maraş observed that the mixture of milk, salep, and sugar had thickened and stretched like gum. He tasted this flavor first and then shared it with people around him. Maraş Ice Cream, which is in high demand, was born that way under the name Karsambaç with Salep.
Maraş Ice Cream, which has been a part of our lives since that day, has not only earned a significant place in Turkish dessert culture with its unique taste and aroma created by goat milk and salep, but also with the mastery and skill required in its production, and has become a world-renowned brand in high demand.
