Evil Eye Charm
The origins of Evil Eye Charm, which is considered as a powerful charm that ward off evil throughout history, go back to ancient times.
It is thought that the belief in evil eye, which still exists today and is symbolized in the form of an eye, dates back to Egypt and, in ancient Egyptian history, it represents the eye of Horus who had one eye of the moon and one eye of the sun.
This belief, which later reached Anatolia, was reinterpreted in the hands of Anatolian artisans by combining it with art and eye motifs were embroidered on blue colored glass, which Turks believe to represent Tengri (the Sky God).
The Evil Eye Charm, which has a traditional background due to its unique shape, color, and structure, as well as a production technique passed down from master to apprentice, is produced in İzmir and exported worldwide, where it is widely known as the Turkish charm.
Especially Nazarköy and Görece villages of Izmir, which are famous for evil eye charm, have introduced us highly skilled masters of this art. One of these craftsmen, Mahmut Sür, a charm maker listed as a UNESCO Living Human Treasure, has been making evil eye charms in Izmir since he was 14.
Every year, many visitors from all over Türkiye visit Nazarköy and Görece and have the opportunity to closely observe the nuances of this art.
People who wear it, usually as a bracelet or necklace, believe that the evil eye charm wards off evil spirits and bad luck.
